Pint of Science returns to Sydney, bringing scientists ready to share their latest discoveries and ideas in pubs across the city. Come along for a casual evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from researchers, ask questions and be part of the conversation. The only thing you need to bring is your curiosity - no scientific knowledge required!
The Hidden Footprint of Scuba Tourism on Coral Reefs
Dr Bing Lin
(Postdoctoral Research Associate in Sustainability Science, the University of Sydney)
Scuba diving often has a green reputation—but how reef-friendly is it, really? I secretly tagged along on hundreds of real dives across the Indo-Pacific to find out. Think you’re a good steward of the sea? Tune in to see what actually happens underwater—and why even well-meaning divers can do more harm than they realize.
A Bird on the Brink: The Plight of the Orange-bellied Parrot
Dr Soleille Morelli Miller
(Conservation Biologist & Postdoctoral Researcher, the University of Sydney and UNSW)
The orange-bellied parrot is one of Australia’s most endangered birds, now functionally extinct in the wild. Using genome data from the last population, my research measures genetic diversity to inform new strategies for its recovery.
Would You Trust a Robot With Your Kidney?
Harry Robertson
(Researcher, the University of Sydney | Harry is teaching computers to diagnose kidney disease. A Fulbright Scholar with a family background in nursing, he's driven by making AI work for patients.)
Thousands of Australians are diagnosed with kidney disease every year, but the way we diagnose it hasn't changed in decades: one pathologist, one microscope, one opinion. We are building AI that can "read" kidney biopsies, spotting disease faster and more consistently than ever before. We'll take you inside computational pathology, where digital images contain more pixels than a 4K movie and algorithms are learning to see what the human eye can't. What does AI get right, wrong, and what's next?
