Pint of Science returns to Sydney, bringing scientists ready to share their latest discoveries and ideas in pubs across the city. Come along for a casual evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from researchers, ask questions and be part of the conversation. Do insects feel, and should we care?
A/Prof Thomas White
(Associate Professor in Evolutionary Ecologist and Entomologist, the University of Sydney)
Dr Kate Lynch
(Senior Lecturer in History and Philosophy in Science, the University of Sydney)
Using a mix of experiments and philosophy, we are on the quest to discover how insect minds work. do they feel pleasure, pain, lust and love? Are they sentient? And does it matter?
Pregnant seahorse dads supply nutrients to developing babies
Arda Poda
(Doctoral Researcher, the University of Sydney)
In seahorses, remarkably, the males get pregnant. New research shows how much the seahorse dads support their babies, transporting nutrients like calcium via a placenta.
After my undergraduate studies in USYD, I moved into research with an Honours looking at calcium transport during seahorse pregnancy. Now, I’m continuing on with a PhD looking at interactions between fathers and embryos during seahorse pregnancy.
