Pint of Science returns to Sydney, bringing scientists ready to share their latest discoveries and ideas in pubs across the city. Come along for a casual evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from researchers, ask questions and be part of the conversation. The only thing you need to bring is your curiosity - no scientific knowledge required!
From Lab to Street: Cooling Solutions for People Experiencing Homelessness
Dr Tim English
(Senior Lecturer in Heat and Health, the University of Sydney)
What happens when you cannot escape the heat? Discover how simple cooling strategies tested in the lab are being transformed into mobile cooling hubs for people experiencing homelessness.
From microscopes to MRIs: Let's talk brain dynamics across scales
Dr Annie G Bryant
(Postdoctoral Research Associate, the University of Sydney | Annie grew up in New Jersey and studied neuroscience/bioinformatics in Boston before moving to Sydney for her PhD in 2021. She's a data visualization keen bean, and outside of the lab, you'll probably find Annie hiking, hammocking, or roller skating.)
Want to make sense of the brain's complexity? Ditto. We'll discuss how modern tools from neuroimaging, physics, and statistics help us link multi-scale brain dynamics to big questions, from consciousness to psychiatric/neurodegenerative disorders.
Could animal behaviour be the key to reducing predation on endangered birds?
Bianca McBryde
(PhD candidate in behavioural ecology, the University of Sydney | With over 6 years of experience in ecological research, Bianca is passionate about developing evidence-based solutions to real world conservation problems.)
What do we do when one threatened species is eating another? Is it okay to intervene? And how do we do so ethically? As more of our native species decline due to habitat destruction and changing climates, we are increasingly faced with this difficult problem. My research aims to test if we can use animal behaviour techniques to gently nudge native predators away from predating on critically endangered birds.
