Health is shaped by more than just medicine - it’s influenced by our genes, our daily habits, and the care available in our communities. In this event, explore how cutting-edge technologies like gene editing, simple changes to sleep and activity patterns, and community health screening programs are helping people live healthier lives. Expect useful insights, surprising facts, and plenty to think about long after the talks are over.

24-hour health: How much sleep, rest and movement matter

Ty Ferguson (Ty Ferguson is a Research Fellow at Adelaide University. His research explores how daily patterns of sleep, sedentary behaviour and physical activity are influenced by our time availability and external factors such as the weather and climate. )

Using data from wearable activity trackers, patterns across work weeks, weekends and holidays can show how time is actually spent. Environmental factors such as weather and climate also play an important role in this daily balance. Small shifts in behaviour can add up over time for our health and wellbeing.

How do you fix a harmful gene without damaging the healthy ones? This talk dives into the challenges, breakthroughs, and future of gene editing therapies, and how they could one day help restore sight.

From paddock to pitch: tackling diabetes and heart health in community

Jae Williams and Kirsty Emery (Jae and Kirsty are medical scientists at the Flinders University, International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing. They coordinate and deliver safe health risk assessments with community partners. )
Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are two common chronic diseases impacting healthcare costs in Australia. Providing access to diabetes and heart health checks at community events can inform individuals at high risk of cardiometabolic disease. This is important for community members who may not seek regular medical assessment or have limited general practitioner access. This presentation describes health assessment partnerships with Fat Farmers and the Shane Warne Legacy/SiSU Health.
