Come along for an evening that’s entertaining, eye-opening, and perfect for the curious.
A Deep Dive into Fear of Sharks
Brianna Le Busque
(Dr. Brianna Le Busque is an environmental psychology scientist at Adelaide University. Her research explores humans’ relationships to the ocean, including sharks. She applies psychological insights to understand fear of sharks.)
Sharks are synonymous with fear, but why? This talk dives beneath the surface of shark fear, applying psychology to unpack why sharks scare many of us more than the risk of shark bites according to statistics. From media hype and fear generalisation to familiarity, control, and children’s perceptions, discover what really fuels fear but also why communicating shark risk is challenging.
The Secret Social Life of a "Solitary" Koala
Bronte Fairclough
(Bronte is a PhD researcher studying how animals communicate, with a focus on koalas. She uses sound to understand behaviour, relationships, and how wildlife responds to an increasingly noisy world.)
Koalas aren’t as quiet as you might think—they have a hidden vocal world, from deep bellows to a newly discovered alarm call. My research asks a critical question: what happens when human noise starts to drown it out?
Writing down the DNA of grapevines, to share a glass with our grandchildren
Andres Zhou-Tsang
(Andres is a biologist and wine enthusiast. Originally from Madrid, Spain, he moved to Adelaide to pursue a PhD in grape genetics. He enjoys exploring either nature or vibrant streets, tasting food from different cultures, and reading about history. )
Wine is at risk of decline due to climate change as vineyards face harsher environmental conditions. To prevent an outcome of empty glasses in hot days, we grape and wine scientists look into the DNA of grapevines to produce resilient varieties.
