Our bodies are complex things. Did you know, some people start out at a health disadvantage right from birth, some of us ingest microplastic throughout our life while some spend more time in heritage sites and feel a bit better? Come and learn about the complex body at Pint of Science Wednesday night.

Plastic People: Chemical Exposure and our Health

Michaela Lucas (Clinical Professor Michaela Lucas is a clinical immunologist/allergist and immunopathologist and clinician-scientist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, PathWest, Perth Children’s Hospital and UWA, where she leads a multi-disciplinary research team at the Immunology and Transplantation Lab. The WA Women’s Hall of Fame inductee and national leader in clinical immunology and allergy is currently the principal investigator of the Plastic Exposure Reduction Transforms Health (PERTH) Trial)
Discover insights from the PERTH Trial, a groundbreaking study exploring the impact of plastic chemicals on adult health. Focusing on chemicals, such as BPA and phthalates, the study examines their potential link to chronic diseases. Through a seven-day diet and lifestyle intervention involving blood, urine and stool sample analysis, as well as dietary recalls, the research aims to uncover common sources of plastic exposure in everyday life, how these chemicals are processed by the body, and their possible contribution to inflammation and long-term health risks.

Protecting the preterm brain: How AI is Changing Care for Preterm Infants.

Emily McLeish ( Emily is an early career researcher and BrightSpark Fellow with the Neonatal Health Team. She completed her PhD in 2024 and now uses AI and MRI to better understand brain injury in preterm infants and predict developmental outcomes.)
