What do protein molecules, dark matter, and astrology-inspired satire have in common? Join us for a night where science meets creativity and mystery. Discover how microscopic protein changes have shaped the course of evolution, explore the elusive nature of dark matter and the atomic tools that might help us detect it, and enjoy witty musical performances by Nate Eggins that blend science literacy with humour—from astrology takedowns to cosmic curiosity. Expect a night of big ideas, catchy tunes, and mind-expanding questions.
Atomic approaches to dethrone the hide-and-seek champion of the Universe
Ashlee Caddell
(PhD Candidate, University of Queensland)
Dark matter makes up most of the matter in the Universe. Despite this, it evades detection at every turn. We may be able to get some insight from atoms instead, whether we are using conventional detectors or atomic clocks. In this talk, Ashlee will discuss potential ways to detect a variety of dark matter types using atom systems

Decoding Evolution: The Molecular Story of Life’s Transformations
Dr Ashar Malik
(Post-doc, University of Queensland)
Evolution is often seen in grand transformations—dinosaurs into birds, fish onto land. Beneath these shifts lies the hidden story of protein evolution. This talk uncovers how tiny molecular changes drive life’s biggest adaptations, revealing evolution’s true blueprint.
Science-themed musical performance
Nate Eggins
(Science communicator, Outreach officer)
Nate writes and perform songs exploring basic scientific literacy and critical thinking with an inclusive tone and a great sense of humour. A cross between Tim Minchin & Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, could it be the stars or the universe he sings on? Or something else entirely!
