Feeding the future takes science, innovation, and a little genetic magic! From methane-busting cow feed to disease-fighting rice and climate-resilient crops, this session is all about sustainable agriculture for a hungry planet. Discover how today’s researchers are growing a greener, smarter, and more delicious tomorrow—one breakthrough at a time.
Improving crops for current and future climates
Dr Shanice Van Haeften
(Post-doc, University of Queensland)
Climate change is a major challenge to our food security as the global population rapidly grows. Discover how cutting-edge technologies are helping us rapidly develop new crop varieties that are more resilient and can produce higher yields— ensuring we can feed tomorrow's world.

Tackling Climate Change by Targeting Cow Burps
Dr Viviene Santiago
(Post-doc, University of Queensland)
Methane, a by-product of cow digestion, is a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat inside the atmosphere. Viviene's research focuses on developing an additive that can reduce methane emissions in cattle without negatively affecting the cows’ health and resulting product.

Baddies in the paddies
Sabrina Morrison
(PhD candidate, University of Queensland)
Rice feeds half the world’s population, but our paddies are continually threatened by evolving pests and diseases. In this talk, we explore some of the genetic munitions that rice scientists use to combat these diseases and protect one of the world’s most important plants.
