What the Heck is a Skyrmion?

Dr Karen Livesey (Senior Lecturer, University of Newcastle)
Never heard of a magnetic skyrmion? You're not alone! These are tiny swirls in magnetic materials that are only a few atoms wide. They were only measured for the first time around 10 years ago. Come along to find out what exactly magnetic skyrmions are, and how they may help us obtain smaller and lower power computers.

Dr Karen Livesey moved to the University of Newcastle in 2020 after almost 10 years in Colorado, USA. She is a theoretical physicist who studies magnetic nano-materials. In 2023 and 2024 she is a national Superstar of STEM supported by Science and Technology Australia.
