Embark on a night of discovery where we will journey through the holes in our world's porous materials, witness stars behaving like planets in a cosmic spectacle, and find hidden Nickel deposits under the sand.
The Wonderful World of Porous Materials!
Neil Robinson
(The University of Western Australia)
Porous materials underpin our lives, from our bones, to our food, to materials in our houses and cars. In this talk we'll take a dive into this world of weird and wonderful materials, and learn a little about Neil's research understanding the use of such materials for energy applications. The tools used in the lab are unique, and are based on the application of mini MRI (like you'd find in the hospital!) to "see inside" these porous structures.
Secrets in the Sand
Louise Schoneveld
(CSIRO)
Have you ever picked up handful of sand and wondered what lies below? We use the chemistry in minerals found at the surface to understand if a nickel deposit may be hiding underneath.
Radio stars behaving like planets!
Barnali Das
(CSIRO)
Stars and planets are completely different types of objects. Despite that, some stars appear surprisingly similar to planets in terms of their radio emission. I will talk about these stars, and discuss the significance of this resemblance.
