What can we learn from other communities adapting to disasters, and how can we prepare for the next one?
How to move a community: lessons on disaster and climate-related relocations
Dr Liam Moore
(Lecturer, James Cook University)
Around Australia there are numerous communities having to contend with the idea of moving away from their homes as the risks posed by hazards and disasters become too great. From Lismore, to the Torres Strait, and all the way to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands - this isn't a future problem, it's something people are confronting now. Australia doesn't have a coherent plan for managing these processes. Liam will share the lessons Australia and North Queensland can learn from early adopters of similar policies to better prepare our communities for the realities of the future.
