Movement comes in many different forms; lets learn about a few tonight! From how we speed up subatomic particles, pregnant people keeping active, and seismic waves in the earth beneath us!

Towards the Speed of Light: How do Particle Accelerators actually work?

Bethany Spear (I completed my PhD in accelerator physics at the University of Oxford, where I focused on the instrumentation and hardware of particle accelerators. I’m passionate about science communication and enjoy sharing how accelerator technology works and why it matters, helping make complex physics more accessible to wider audiences.)
What does it take to accelerate a proton to nearly the speed of light? This talk follows the journey from a simple hydrogen atom to high-energy collisions, introducing the key ideas behind particle accelerators along the way. Explore how electric fields push particles forward, how magnets guide and focus their paths, and how precise instrumentation keeps everything under control. By unpacking the technology that powers accelerators, you’ll see how these machines allow scientists to probe the smallest building blocks of matter and better understand the fundamental laws of the universe.

Exploring Earth's deep interior

Stuart Russell (I am a geophysicist who has researched variety of topics from the deep structure of planets, to exploration for Australian mineral deposits. I achieved my PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2023, and have been in Townsville since January 2026.)
Earth’s surface is an exciting place. Not only do we live here, but there are animals and plants, mountains and oceans, earthquakes and volcanoes. But the surface is simply the foam on the pint of beer – the real excitement lies beneath. This talk is an exploration of our planet’s deep interior. What does the Earth look like beneath the crust? How do we know? And why should you care about processes occurring 1000s of kilometres beneath your feet?

Baby Steps: Exercising during Pregnancy

Kate Oxnard (Kate Oxnard is a Lecturer in Clinical Exercise Physiology at James Cook University and PhD Candidate at Australian Catholic University. Her research investigates how active people exercise and how their bodies adapt throughout pregnancy.)
Pregnancy can raise a lot of questions for enthusiastic exercisers. What’s safe, what isn’t, and what advice should be trusted? Whether you’re pregnant, planning, supporting someone, or simply curious, this talk explores how exercise habits change throughout pregnancy, how the body responds, and what current guidelines recommend.
