In the next instalment of our highlight series for our 10 year anniversary, we had a chat to Tyrone Humphries, our Festival Operations Manager for Pint of Science Australia!

Tyrone Humphries

Festival Operations Manager

What do you do for Pint of Science?

I’m the Festival Operations Manager. My role is to work with my team of Festival Operations Officers to ensure that the festival actually happens and runs smoothly both in the lead up to and on the nights themselves.

What does success look like in your Pint of Science Role?

Success is not necessarily explicit for me. I want to feel that everything is under control and things are running on time and are the best that they can be. That people enjoy themselves and walk away from Pint with an overly positive experience.

Why PoS over other volunteer organisations?

First of all, the idea that you can talk science over a beer. I love science communication and it shouldn’t be restricted to professional events or the scientific community. It should be enjoyed by all, whenever and wherever. There is no better way than other a cold one with friends. I also love the capacity to work remote; we are connected with all of Australia within our team, and it opens the door to so many opportunities and experiences.

2024 is the 10-year anniversary of PoS in Australia. What are you planning to do to make next year’s festival special?

In the many years that I’ve been with Pint, I’ve been a volunteer on the night every night and haven’t had the chance to just sit back and relax and watch some fantastic science comm. I plan on making an effort this year to see what Pint is about on the spectator side!

What do you do as a day job?

I’m a medical researcher in the field of nephrology and urology research. More specifically, I’m in the final stages of my PhD so I’ll be writing up my thesis alongside the festival this year. My research involves assessing and developing different magnetic resonance technologies for the assessment of chronic kidney disease in patients. I work with cells, animals (controversial, but a very necessary facet of medical research) and people.

In three "dot points", describe yourself?

  • Jack of all trades, master of none – I like to dabble in many things. Augmented by an inflated sense of self-confidence, I tend to think I can do things I probably can’t.
  • Determined – When I set myself a task, I don’t stop at anything until it is achieved.
  • Fun-loving – I love to have fun and there are very few situations in life where you need to be 100% serious.
