In the first of a series of pieces about our amazing volunteers for our 10 year anniversary, we had a chat to Emily Cameron, the Festival Operations Manager at Pint of Science Australia!
What do you do for Pint of Science?
I am the Festival Operations Manager – essentially, I coordinate the Festival Operations Project Officers to make the Pint of Science Festival events go from ideas on paper to in-person events.
What does success look like in your Pint of Science Role?
Happy festival audiences. Success is when we have wonderful venues, interesting speakers, and smooth delivery. I was overjoyed to contribute to the wide reach of Pint of Science Australia in 2023. I am especially excited when we can hold events in regional areas.
Why Pint of Science over other volunteer organisations?
I am passionate about science communication, and I believe the adult audience is underserved by many projects. In Australia there are organisations doing exceptional work to inspire school-aged children to get into STEM, however once you graduate school you see fewer opportunities to connect with STEM if you aren’t in a relevant field. This cross-discipline festival takes some of the very best of Australian science and delivers it in an approachable format.
2024 is the 10-year anniversary of Pint of Science in Australia. What are you planning to do to make next year’s festival special?
More! We have had some extraordinary events in the 10 years of serving science to thirsty minds and I am excited to celebrate that legacy. I am dreaming about seeing previous speakers return to share what the latest chapters of their science story looks like and would love to see Pint of Science reaching into regional communities to spotlight the STEM work that happens everywhere in Australia.
What do you do as a day job?
I work at the World Science Festival presented by the Queensland Museum. In my day job, I coordinate science festival events and program education sessions to share STEM in an exciting and informative manner.
In three "dot points", describe yourself?
- Enthusiastic; I am excited to talk about everyone’s passion.
- Driven; I’m always working towards the next goal/milestone.
- Good humoured; science doesn’t have to be serious and I’m definitely not.
