Embark on a journey through the cosmos as we explore the universality of gravity and the three body chaos, discuss how we can make a map the Universe, and celebrate what we've learned from the James Webb Space Telescope. Join us for a night where cosmic phenomena meet cutting-edge science.
Three Body Chaos: From the Solar System to Gravitational Waves
Dr Evgeni Grishin
(Post-doc, Monash University)
Two-body motion has a simple solution, but three-body motion is notoriously chaotic. We'll explore how gravity’s universality on multiple length and mass scales and three-body chaos shape Solar System objects and drive black hole mergers, producing gravitational waves.

Listening to the Universe with a galaxy-sized ear
Rowina Nathan
(PhD candidate, Monash University)
Gravitational waves are continuously rippling spacetime: the fabric making up our Universe. If you listen very closely (with an ear the size of the galaxy) you can hear a background rumble. Rowina's team mapped this rumbling and found something surprising. What did they find? How the heck does one build a telescope that big? Come to this talk and find out!

Peering into the early Universe with the James Webb Space Telescope
Dr Rebecca Davies
(ARC DECRA Fellow, Swinburne University of Technology)
Since NASA’s US$10-billion James Webb Space Telescope was launched on Christmas Day 2021, it has completely revolutionised our understanding of galaxy growth in the early Universe. This talk will take you on a journey through some of the most exciting discoveries, from the most distant galaxies known, to abundant supermassive black holes, to “impossibly massive” galaxies, and potential signatures of the first stars in the Universe.
