Strap yourselves as our astrophysics researchers take you on a journey of the Universe. They’ll explain how gravitational waves can create a map of the Universe and tell us how fast it’s expanding, and illuminate how machine learning is being used to shed new light on the Universe’s Magnetism.

Listening to the Universe with a galaxy-sized ear

Dr Rowina Nathan (Dr Rowina Nathan is a gravitational‑wave astrophysicist at ANU, using spacetime ripples to test our understanding of gravity and study the cosmic gravitational‑wave background. She’s also the science communicator behind @PinkAstrophysicist.)
We created the biggest-ever gravitational wave detector to make a map of the Universe. What did we find? How the heck does one build a telescope that big? Come to my talk!

Predict, Point, Observe: Linking gravitational waves to their host galaxies

Dr Liana Rauf (Dr Liana Rauf is an astrophysicist at ANU and OzGrav who studies the Universe using gravitational waves sources and their host galaxies. She currently leads the optical telescope programs to follow-up these powerful cosmic events.)
Ever wondered what we can learn about the Universe using the most powerful cosmic events and the environments they are born in? In this talk, I will give an overview of my research - from simulations of these events to their observations using the amazing facilities we have in Australia.

Seeing the stars: the evolution of adaptive optics

Yuri Sheinker (Yuri is an undergraduate student majoring in physics at ANU, with research in adaptive optics and radio astronomy. Originally from Brisbane, Yuri moved to Canberra for the cooler weather and of course, the science!)
Telescopes have come a long way since Newton's time. But how have they improved? This talk will go over a key part of modern telescopes: adaptive optics.
