Marsupials illuminate brain development and evolution
Rodrigo Suarez
(The University of Queensland)
Only mammals evolved a cerebral cortex, the wrinkly part of our brains that is vital for sensory-motor and cognitive functions. By using marsupial mammals as experimental models, we have discovered key aspects of how the brains form and diversified across species: the advantage is that joeys are born remarkably underdeveloped and all cortical formation occurs postnatally. Our research program includes fundamental questions of how development shapes evolution, how genetic and environmental cues interact to form healthy connections, and applications such as new biomarkers of early brain health that could help improve management of premature babies.
