Pint of Science returns to Sydney, bringing scientists ready to share their latest discoveries and ideas in pubs across the city. Come along for a casual evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from researchers, ask questions and be part of the conversation. The only thing you need to bring is your curiosity - no scientific knowledge required!
Genomic revolution meets spider evolution
Dr Ethan James Briggs
(Evolutionary Biologist and Chadwick Biodiversity Fellow, Australian Museum)
Modern DNA sequencing has given us the ability to unlock new areas of evolutionary biology. We pieced together a genome of one of the world's largest spiders, then compared it to their relatives to find out how spider genomes have changed over time
Light at the Endo the Tunnel: Personalising Treatment for Endometriosis Patients
Dr Kate Gunther
(Dr Kate Gunther is a translational researcher at the Ainsworth Endometriosis Research Institute, UNSW, uncovering the hidden biology of endometriosis and linking patient experiences to lab research to develop personalised treatments.)
Endometriosis affects millions but remains misunderstood. This talk explores why it behaves so differently in different people, what we're learning in the lab, and what it could mean for treatment.
The Psychological Toll of a Changing Climate
Ellie Gordon
(I am a PhD Candidate at the Matilda Centre, University of Sydney. My research focuses on identifying factors associated with climate-related distress, with the longer-term aim of developing interventions that support more adaptive coping responses.)
Climate change is deemed the greatest health challenge of the 21st century, but its impact on our mental health is only just coming into focus. You may have heard terms like climate anxiety or eco-anxiety, but what do they actually mean?
This talk explores why people are increasingly reporting distress about climate change, and how these emotions impact our mental health. Discussion will also cover how we can cope constructively, without slipping into denial, hopelessness, or disengagement.
