Biological control of invasive plants – no it’s not “just like the cane toad!”
Tamara Taylor
(DAF - Biosecurity QLD)
The process of evaluating and testing suitable biological control agents for the control of invasive weeds in Australia is a time-consuming and expensive enterprise. And so it should be! We need to keep Australia safe from the possibility of releasing organisms that damage our natural environment and economy. To allay any fears about the reliability of the tests and checks put in place, Tamara will be describing the various hoops that must be jumped in this rigorous research process.
Prediction of groundwater dynamics using Deep Learning and remotely sensed information
Dr Dan Pagendam
(CSIRO)
Dan explains how they use statistics and machine learning for biological control of invasive mosquito populations, prediction of groundwater dynamics and quantifying uncertainty surrounding predictions of soil carbon sequestration in agriculture.
Cloud Forests and Climate Change
Dr Melinda Laidlaw
(DES)
Melinda is a Science Leader within DESI’s Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science team and an ecologist studying the impacts of climate change and bushfires on the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Join her as she discusses what the future holds for the Gondwana rainforests.
