Start your week a little differently.

Pint of Science brings researchers into the pub to explore what happens when nature falls out of sync — from shifting seasons that could drive evolution, to methane‑producing cows, and the science behind tackling climate change.

Join us for a relaxed Monday evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from scientists, ask questions, and be part of the conversation — no science background required.

Maps of Earth's seasons reveal places where asynchrony could drive evolution

Drew Terasaki Hart (Drew is an evolutionary biologist and biogeographer with failed careers as a farmer and chef. He has a passion for using quantitative thinking and computational tools to address creative questions in science and conservation.)
The seasonality of ecosystems can be much more complicated than our simple notions of winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Satellites offer an objective, data-driven view of this. Our innovative approach to analysis of satellite imagery paints an intimate portrait of Earth's seasonal rhythms. This lends unprecedented insight into key regions around the world where asynchronous seasonal timing between nearby places can have surprising implications for ecology, economy, and even evolution. Come for the science, stay for the psychedelic maps!

Tackling Climate Change by Targeting Cow Burps

Viviene Santiago (Viviene completed her PhD at UQ in 2023 studying potential antibiotics from bacteria and fungi. Now a Research Fellow at QAAFI, she works on cutting cattle methane emissions and analysing what makes Australian honey unique.)
Methane, a by-product of cow digestion, is more potent than CO2 in trapping atmospheric heat. My work focuses on developing methane-reducing supplements in cows.

Healthy Planet, Healthy People

Esther Onyango (Dr Esther Onyango is an interdisciplinary scientist specialising in climate change and human health, with expertise in planetary health, systems modelling, food systems, and translating complex evidence into policy and action.)
When we think about climate change, we often picture heat, floods, fires, or rising seas. But climate change is not just an environmental issue; it is a human health issue. From infectious disease and food insecurity to antimicrobial resistance and rising vulnerability, our health depends on the systems that sustain life. This talk explores those links through a planetary health lens, illustrating why systems thinking matters if we want solutions that are both effective and sustainable.
