Shake up your Tuesday night with research that will make you squirm, think, and maybe reconsider what you know about your own body. From ending the guessing game in women's health and unlocking the heart's deepest secrets, to the ultimate question: would you deliberately infect yourself with a parasitic worm?

Join us for a relaxed Tuesday evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from scientists, ask questions, and be part of the conversation — no science background required.

Growing endometriosis in the lab for drug screening and treatment

Isaac Kyei Barffour (Isaac is an International Research Training Program Scholar and National Endometriosis Clinical and Scientific Trials Network PhD Fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. His research focuses on Molecular Medicine and Genome Engineering.)
Endometriosis treatment remains trial-and-error. How it starts and progresses is not understood. My research is growing endometrium in the lab to study endometriosis and for drug screening.

Unlocking the Mysteries of the Heart

Simon Foster (I’m a scientist at QIMR Berghofer studying how the heart works and searching for new medicines to treat heart disease. Our team uses cutting-edge mini-hearts in the lab to uncover what goes wrong in the heart and how we might fix it.)
The heart is an amazing pump essential for life, yet it still holds many secrets. We study how it works—and why it fails—to help create new medicines for heart disease.

This wormy world

Catherine Gordon (I am a biologist and wine enthusiast. Originally from Madrid, Spain, I moved to Adelaide to pursue a PhD in grape genetics. I enjoy exploring either nature or vibrant streets, tasting food from different cultures, and reading about history.)
Parasitic worms might sound gross, but there's more to them than meets the eye. In this talk I'll take you through my favourite worms, show some gross images and videos and ask the question, would you infect yourself with a worm?
