How Intentional are our Everyday Music Listening Habits?

Dr Amanda Krause (Lecturer, James Cook University)
We can listen to music almost anywhere, any time – often while doing other activities. So, what everyday activities are accompanied by music? And how do people’s intentions for the inclusion of music as an activity accompaniment influence their experiences?

Dr Amanda Krause is a Lecturer (Psychology) at James Cook University. Her expertise is in the social and applied psychology of music, and her recent research concerns how everyday music experiences influence people’s well-being.

Bamboo: A Digital Peer Support Initiative for First-time Mothers

Ms Kaila Putter (PhD Candidate, James Cook University)
The Bamboo WebApp will facilitate the pairing of mums in the perinatal period with trained peer mentors and offer a digital resource centre to facilitate mentor-mentee interactions on topics such as parenting and self-care. Our goal is to establish a widely accessible and cost-effective framework to improve maternal mental health.

Kaila Putter began her PhD at James Cook University in 2022 and has a keen interest in perinatal mental health and applied music psychology.

The Perils and Pitfalls of Engaging in Science Communication

Ms Alison Sheaves (PhD Candidate, James Cook University)
It is necessary for scientists to engage in science communication. However, this process is fraught with complications, from funding and career implications to personal safety risks. This research highlights this complicated space and demonstrates the resilience scientists must face when striving to communicate their science to the broader public.

Alison Sheaves is a PhD candidate at James Cook University. She has recently presented her research findings at the International Public Communication of Science and Technology conference in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
