Our universe just keeps getting bigger and bigger, changing the world around us. Dr Leo Giani will discuss how gravity is changing with the universe expanding and Dr Ben Pope will show off amazing images of the wonders of this expanding universe we inhabit.
Fixing James Webb
Ben Pope
(University of Queensland)
James Webb is a $10 billion NASA space telescope - but you may not know its highest resolution camera is Australian-made. This Aperture Masking Interferometer, AMI, has imaged planets being born and black holes shining bright: but until our team fixed it with cutting edge computer science, the images were too blurry to use. I will talk about how we managed this, and show off the beautiful images we've obtained!
Is it just me or has gravity become less attractive?
Leo Giani
(University of Queensland)
"What do we know about Gravity? Back in the time of Aristotle, scholars had decided that apples fall from the tree because they want to return to their ""natural"" place. Roughly 2000 years later, Galileo and Newton delivered better explanations for these phenomena based on simple empirical evidence: Gravity is an attractive force. However, at the dusk of the past century, we discovered that the expansion of the Universe has ""recently"" begun accelerating, rechallenging our understanding of gravity. What is the source of such accelerated expansion? Why did the gravitational interaction change behaviour only recently? In this talk, I will review the most recent attempts to address these questions and try to convince you that, beyond everything, gravity has never been more attractive."
