Break up your week a little differently.

Pint of Science brings researchers into the pub to explore why information alone doesn’t always lead to better outcomes. From infections that are becoming harder to treat despite growing awareness, to the challenge of turning data into meaningful action, this night looks at why the same disease, the same evidence, or the same signals can lead to very different results.

Join us for a relaxed Wednesday evening where you can grab a drink and some food, hear from scientists, ask questions, and be part of the conversation — no science background required.

Data Is Powerful… Right?

Zoe Eather (Zoe Eather is The Funny Futurist, a civil engineer, PhD researcher and stand-up comedian redefining how we understand data, technology and AI through a human lens.)
We’ve all heard it, data is powerful.

But if data alone worked to change minds, we’d all agree by now.

Through relatable examples, Zoe shows why the challenge isn’t about better data, but understanding how people make sense of it.

Broken connections: Same disease, different stories

Evans Kiptoo Cheruiyot (Evans Cheruiyot is a postdoctoral research scientist at the University of Queensland studying how biological networks inside our cells break down in disease. His research explores why the same condition can affect people in very different ways, particularly in neurological diseases. He enjoys sharing science with wider audiences and making complex ideas accessible.)
We often think of a disease as a single condition, but in reality, it can look very different from one person to another. Why is that? My research explores how networks of biological signals within cells are disrupted in devastating diseases such as motor neurone, for which we still lack an effective cure. These “broken connections” can vary among individuals, helping to explain why diseases develop and progress differently. By understanding these differences, we can move towards more personalised approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

Superbugs and the benefits of microbial surveillance

Samantha Webster (Sam is a Genomic Scientist for Queensland Health’s Public and Environmental Health Reference Laboratories. Her research focuses on sexually transmitted infections, antimicrobial resistance in Queensland, and improving our surveillance capabilities.)
Most people have been asked to be mindful about their antibiotic use given the growing antimicrobial resistance problem, but what does it have to do with sexually transmitted infections? How do we stop the rise of STIs if they are swiftly growing resistant to available antibiotics?
Sam's talk will explain the current concerns that scientists have about STI superbugs and how microbial surveillance might help us improve outcomes.
