How does both psilocybin, the magic behind magic mushrooms, and serotonin, the master regulator of depression, affect how our brain works. Dr Lena Oestrich and Dr Jacob Thortenson will take us all through these important topics.
Can magic mushrooms change your brain?
Lena Oestreich
(University of Queensland)
Psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms, has been utilized in healing ceremonies by ancient cultures for millennia. In this talk, I will present evidence that psilocybin can induce lasting changes in the brain and discuss how this may provide last relief from mental illness.

Serotonin: can there be too much of a good thing?
Jacob Thortenson
(Bond University and The University of Queensland)
You may be aware of the effects of serotonin in the brain, aka its role in depression and mental health. But serotonin also has effects in the spinal cord and is critical for muscle activation. This talk will detail some recent work exploring how serotonin controls muscle activity and fatigue.
