Antibiotic Resistant Superbugs are not just science fiction, they are a real threat, and they could already be at your local beach. There is also another kind of resistance lurking in our ecosystems, the ability of plants in fire-prone ecosystems to survive and thrive. Come and along and hear the good and the bad of resistance in nature and what is being uncovered.
Bushfires and Cheating Death: the Incredible Endurance of Plants
Sarah McInnes
(PhD Candidate, UNSW Sydney)
Australia is pretty much always on fire. This fiery history has given native plants the ability to survive (and even thrive) in the extremes of a bushfire. This talk will delve into the life of plants in fire-prone ecosystems, and how they endure seemingly impossible conditions.
Sarah McInnes is currently completing her PhD in fire ecology at UNSW Sydney. In 2022, she won the award for best student speaker at the Seed Ecology VII conference in Spain, and is part of the UNSW Women in Maths and Science Champions 2023 cohort.

Swimming with Superbugs: the Effects of Antibiotics Pollution in our Oceans
Dr Charlene Trestrail
(Research Associate, University of Technology Sydney)
Heard of ‘The Last of Us’? Well, forget the fictional fungus – antibiotic resistant superbugs are the real threat, and they are already at your local beach. This presentation explores how superbugs form, and their effects on coastal ecosystems and ocean lovers.
Dr Trestrail is a water pollution researcher. She is currently measuring the levels of antibiotics pollution in our oceans, and working to understand the effects this pollution has on marine life. Dr Trestrail is a passionate, award-winning science communicator.
