Uncover the mysteries of how seals hear beneath the waves, explore the growth and development of ancient bugs, and learn how underwater acoustics are transforming ecological monitoring, conservation, and habitat restoration. Join us for an evening diving deep into the wonders of the natural world!
The Mystery of Superpowered Seal Hearing
Dr James Rule
(Post-doc, Monash University)
Seals have a superpower: they are the only mammals that hear in-air and underwater. This amazing ability defies explanation, and allows seals to sing to each other underwater. Dr. Rule will uncover how their hearing works and when it evolved.
A Recipe for Animal Life
Alyssa Fjeld
(PhD candidate, Monash University)
Ever looked at a majestic dinosaur, or a dodo, and thought to yourself... "Man, that looks delicious"? Me, too! But the animals Alyssa studies are smaller, older, and way stranger. Their research takes us back 520 million years, to a time when Australia's shallow seas were home to some of the first animals to ever evolve. Come join in with an empty stomach and an open mind, as we explore how to build (and maybe cook) some funky fossil friends.

Shhh... Sharks are listening!
Dr Lucille Chapuis
(Research Fellow, La Trobe University)
The ocean is full of sound, from animals, the environment, and even human activity. But noise pollution is rising fast and affecting marine life. Lucille will explore how sharks, rays, and chimaeras hear underwater, and how noise impacts their survival.
