Step back in time as we discover the fun beverages and burning habits of the first humans. How different will it be to our current methods? One way to find out! Make sure you try the specially brewed Pint of Science festival beer by Newstead Brewing Co!

Brewers of the Stone Age

Dr Serena Love (Senior Archaeologist, Everick Foundation)
Travel with us to the Eastern Mediterranean to discover the science behind brews dating back 11,000 years! Based on what we know about the ingredients and methods used in their production, can we guess what these early fermented drinks tasted like?

Dr Love is an archaeologist with 25 years of international experience. Her research includes ancient beer making. In 2018, she teamed up with Bacchus Brewing to re-create three ancient Eygptian beers for the Mummies exhibition at the Queensland Museum.

Mineral magnetics and human occupation

Dr Kelsey Lowe (Research Fellow, University of Queensland)
Let's get geophysical! Find out how a technique called sediment magnetic susceptibility was used to determine the onset of human occupation in an ancient rockshelter site in Australia. Leotards and legwarmers optional.

Dr Lowe is an archaeologist specialising in geophysics, remote sensing and geoarchaeology to understand past human behaviour. Her specialties have led to several projects around the world, including in Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, Indonesia, North America and Southeast Asia.
