Tonight will feature two different researchers from La Trobe University, both focussed on improving the lives of everyday people. Bec Flower is a psychology researcher exploring common barriers to employment for neurodivergent people, and practical strategies for inclusion that will ultimately improve workplaces and the human experience. Joe Tucci is a pharmacist and biomedical researcher who studies viruses that specifically kill bacteria. These viruses, called phages, offer an exciting alternative to antibiotics with potential applications in the treatment of diabetes, some cancers, and gum …
Exciting New Ways to Treat Diseases
Dr Joe Tucci
(Associate Professor, La Trobe University)
As antibiotics are becoming less effective in treating diseases, we're constantly looking for new solutions. Phages, or viruses that specifically kill bacteria, are a potentially exciting option. We'll talk about how we're using phages to try to help in treatment of diabetes, some cancers, and periodontitis.
Joe Tucci is a practicing pharmacist & Associate Professor in Clinical Pharmacy at La Trobe University. He completed his PhD at the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology & Medicine, Melbourne, then took up a post-doctoral fellowship in the Dept of Biochemistry, Leicester, UK
