Learn about how metabolic fat imbalances can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, or how nasty bacteria can be harnessed to target even nastier cancer cells.

Membrane Trafficking and Lipid Metabolism in Health and Disease

Ms Nyakuoy Yak (PhD Candidate, University of Queensland, Queensland Brain Institute/Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology)
Fats play a crucial role in modulating synaptic plasticity and cognition in the brain. Recent studies have revealed the involvement of lipid modifying enzymes and their metabolites in learning and memory consolidation. Dysregulation of lipid balance in the brain has been linked to various neurodegenerative diseases.
Nyakuoy Yak is a Westpac Future Leader’s scholar and a Neuroscience PhD candidate from the University of Queensland. Nyakuoy’s research focuses on secretory pathways, membrane trafficking and lipid metabolism in health and disease.

Enlisting Bacteria in the War on Cancer

Dr Michael Landsberg (Associate Professor, University of Queensland)
We have probably all experienced a nasty bacterial infection at some point in our lives. But what if we could teach those nasty bacteria to instead target cancer cells? Using bacterial-derived toxins to treat and kill unwanted cells, including cancer, might be closer to a reality than you think.

Michael Landsberg completed his PhD in 2003 and currently leads a research group at the University of Queensland that is focused on studying and understanding infectious diseases at the nano scale. He teaches structural biology and molecular biophysics to around 1400 students each year.
