Mapping the cosmos

Dr Cullan Howlett (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, The University of Queensland)
Are aliens out there? Hopefully! But it's unlikely we'll ever meet them. Cullen will explain why, presenting research into producing and analyzing the largest, most complete maps of our Universe ever made.

Cullan obtained his PhD from the UK in 2016, before jetting off to postdocs in Perth and Brisbane. His research aims to unmask the Universe's secrets by combining data from some of the best telescopes in the world with cool computational techniques.

Radio stars killing habitable planets

Dr Benjamin Pope (ARC DECRA Fellow, The University of Queensland)
Using radio astronomy, we have discovered red dwarf stars that are magnetically connected to orbiting planets, producing powerful aurorae - and harsh radiation that could render the otherwise balmy planets uninhabitable.

Benjamin Pope is a Lecturer in Astrophysics & ARC DECRA Fellow at the University of Queensland. After undergraduate studies in Sydney, he completed his doctorate at Balliol College, Oxford, followed by a NASA Sagan Fellowship at New York University.
