Can you imagine the world you're reading in your favourite story, some people can't and Prof Derek Arnold may know why. We'll also hear from Dr Samreen Shaikh on her and her lab's effort to find new treatments for brain cancer in children.
Aphantasia: Life with a blind mind
Derek Arnold
(The University of Queensland, School of Psychology)
Aphantasia is a rare situation, where people can't have imagined sensory experiences - like visual experiences when reading evocative writing. Prof. Arnold is an Aphantasic. He will talk about Aphantasia and his ongoing research to understand how human brains create imagined experiences, and why some of us can't have them.
Can we make their lives better?
Samreen Shaikh
(University of Queensland)
Brain cancer kills more children in Australia than any other disease, and while current treatment options have nonetheless prolonged survival, these kids now have to live with the devastating side effects of cancer treatments. Therefore, me and my lab have set out on the mission to find treatment options that have less severe consequences on these innocent lives.
