Learn about the push to move away from harmful plastics and whether it's had an effect at all. We'll also look at how we can harness naturally-occuring, positive interactions between different habitats to improve marine habitat restoration.

BPA free? Plastic Additives in Australia

Bel Richardson (PhD Candidate, The Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences)
BPA and phthalates were the traditional chemicals used in plastic manufacturing before a global shift towards alternatives. But are we seeing local changes? And why was there a shift at all? Come and join Bel Richardson as they talk about their hunt for plastic additives in wastewater.

Bel Richardson completed their first PhD in creative writing in 2016. They are now doing a Doctorate in Environmental Chemistry. Going forward, they hope to keep one foot in science and the other in science fiction.

Harnessing Positive Interactions to Scale up Coastal Marine Restoration

Dr Maria Vozzo (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, CSIRO)
Seascapes are comprised of many different habitats such as seagrass, mangrove, coral, saltmarsh, oyster and kelp that support biodiverse communities. This presentation will describe how accounting for and harnessing naturally occurring positive interactions among habitats can improve marine habitat restoration.

Maria Vozzo completed her PhD in 2018 at Macquarie University. After her PhD, she was the Project Manager and Postdoc of the Living Seawalls project. She is now a Research Fellow at CSIRO Environment where she is investigating methods to scale up marine habitat restoration.
