Pint of Science Australia offers opportunities for the public to engage with science through our annual festival in May and other activities throughout the year.
We operate based on shared values of respect, inclusion, belonging, collaboration and accountability, articulated below.
We expect our volunteers, speakers, sponsors, partners and stakeholders to be aligned with these values, and their corresponding behaviours.
Respect
Respect values every individual, including their time, background and what they can contribute.
- We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community pay our respects their elders past, present and into the future.
- We listen to alternative viewpoints in a polite and considerate manner even if this viewpoint contradicts our own.
- We avoid gossip.
- We are punctual to meetings and events when our attendance is required, and we provide as much advanced notice of non-attendance as possible if we have conflicting commitments.
Inclusion
Inclusion aims to be as diverse as the public that it reaches out to and it encourages, welcomes and respects the views and experiences of all people wishing to be associated with the organisation regardless of gender, nationality, sexuality, religion, age, cultural background, physical or intellectual capabilities.
- We accept and value an individual’s background and preferences.
- We employ a fair and equitable process for recruitment, allocation of responsibilities and recognising volunteer contributions.
- We do not tolerate discrimination bullying or harassment.
- We intervene to stop any noted discrimination, bullying or harassment or, at the least, report the incident to a line manager or a member of the National Leadership Team.
Belonging
Belonging is membership in, responsibility towards, and contribution, to the community and one’s conduct within that community. Pint of Science Australia has a responsibility to create a safe and supportive culture with all stakeholders to promote science engagement in the local community through its festival and other activities.
- We acknowledge and act on a sense of responsibility to give back.
- We work with community partners to develop, deliver, and promote, science engagement activities.
- We partner with organisations who work towards a sustainable future and improved outcomes for the community and general environment through the application of research.
- We act on feedback gathered from event participants, attendees, and volunteers.
Collaboration
Collaboration's main goal is to let people own their responsibilities and perform their tasks in tandem with their team members. Instead of working in silos, team members regularly work together to make sure that individual and common goals are being met through the sharing of creative thoughts and concepts.
- We participate in regular team meetings to share and workshop ideas.
- We work across silos and teams to achieve common goals.
- We welcome and consider questions and ideas from others, even if they are outside our team, about how we could do something differently.
Accountability
Accountability demonstrates responsibility to Pint of Science and its mission, its stakeholders and to other volunteers. An accountable person provides exceptional service to Pint of Science Australia and the people it engages with while upholding personal and professional integrity in all interactions.
- We act with integrity and declare any conflict of interests so there can be trust in our decision making.
- We do what we say, and we say what we do.
- We transparently report on allocated activities, particularly those on which others depend on to progress their activities.
- If we have committed to a role or task, we try to fulfill it as agreed. If we are unable to fulfill it by the agreed date or time, we acknowledge the situation, make efforts to communicate this as soon as possible, and seek additional support from the team.
- We recognise that everyone makes mistakes. When an error occurs, we acknowledge it and are open about it with team leaders and members as appropriate. We resolve the issue resolved promptly and respectfully, using support from our team as required.
Support
Pint of Science Australia appreciates that if volunteers feel supported, they are more likely to be committed and satisfied with their experience leading to continued engagement and the encouragement of others to join the organisation. A supported volunteer will be able to carry out their role to the best of their ability. Support can be either organisational via the Leadership Team or via other team members and can take the form of induction and training programs, regular team meetings, having a committed supervisor to advise and mentor, and having volunteer contribution valued and recognised.
- We promote opportunities for individuals to develop and/or apply their skills outside of their employment remit.
- We participate in regular volunteer/supervisor meetings.
- We handle concerns and complaints in a mature and measured manner whilst avoiding victimisation of the complainant.
- We formally recognising volunteer contribution via shout outs, thank you gifts, or other approved means.
- We value constructive feedback as team members or team leaders and apply feedback to provide better support where it is needed, and this need is voiced.
- We take complaints seriously.
