Food waste, threatened species and bird feeders...hmmm...maybe we could feed leftover lasagna to threatened birds? For less birdbrained solutions to these problems, come listen to our experts from CSIRO, Melbourne Uni and Deakin University!

Eliminating food loss

Dr Ed Fox (Senior Research Microbiologist, CSIRO)
Approximately one third of food we produce is not consumed, but instead lost from our food supply. I will discuss new initiatives to eliminate this loss of valuable food!

Saving threatened species in the city

Dr Kylie Soanes (Research Fellow, University of Melbourne)
How can we have more nature in cities? We'll explore the opportunities and challenges for nature conservation in urban environments, and get to know a few of Australia’s urban-occuring threatened species a little better.

Should we feed birds?

Dr Grainne Cleary (Research Fellow, Deakin University)
In this talk I will discuss results from the Australian Bird Feeding and Watering study. In Europe and America feeding birds is a popular and important wildlife-human interaction. Recent studies have shown that interacting with birds this way can provides mental health benefits. However in Australia the conservation message is to discourage people from feeding birds. Despite this, it has been estimated that over 50% of households provide food for birds. In this talk I will discuss why people feed birds and what they feel are the pros and cons to providing food for wild birds.
