Challenging the Laws of Physics

fine tuning universe 2

16
May

Doors 7pm. Event 7.30 - 9.30pm.

Bar Cleveland 433 Cleveland St,
Surry Hills 2010

Tonight we will aim to change the Laws of Physics. Prof. Jason Twamley will talk about quantum computing and the important of such research. Astrophysicist Dr. George Hobbs will explain what mysterious pulsars are and why their study is so important for physicists. After the break, cosmologist Dr. Luke Barnes will challenge our understanding of the physical constants to demonstrate that we live in a finely-tuned Universe. This event is for those aged 18 years and older.

Tech 2 Blue Circuit

Building quantum cats and hearing them purr...

Prof. Jason Twamley (Professor; Chair, Quantum Information Science, Macquarie University)

Quantum mechanics tells us that objects at the micro scale can be in multiple places at once. We discuss the race to build large systems in many states at once and the quest towards Quantum Cats!

Atoms 10 Wormhole syd

Black holes, pulsars, gravitational waves and spacecraft

Dr George Hobbs (CSIRO Australia Telescope National Facility)

Dr George Hobbs will describe how observations of pulsars can be used to search for massive black holes, ripples in space and time and to navigate spacecraft through our galaxy.

finely tuned Universe

A Fortunate Universe

Dr Luke Barnes (Cosmologist at the University of Sydney)

Over the last forty years, scientists have uncovered evidence that if the Universe had been forged with even slightly different properties, life as we know it - and life as we can imagine it - would be impossible. Join us on a journey through how we understand the Universe, from its most basic particles and forces, to planets, stars and galaxies, and back through cosmic history to the birth of the cosmos. The talk will address what fine-tuning might mean for the future of physics and the search for the ultimate laws of nature.
